Visit History: Tudor History

I have always been interested in Tudor history. The Tudors' past is both intriguing and captivating. The reigns of Henry VII and the unexpectedly successful Elizabeth I have left a lasting legacy. Recently, I had the chance to explore Tudor homes and palaces in London and Kent.

Hever Castle

Located in Kent, Hever Castle served as Anne Boleyn's childhood residence. Originating from the 14th century, it was initially built as a medieval defensive structure. The Boleyn family acquired the castle in 1462, and it subsequently changed hands among various families. During her early courtship with Henry VII, Anne used the castle as a retreat.

In 1903, William Astor purchased and restored the castle. The castle today sits on beautiful grounds and still exudes a rich history with modern touches.

Hampton Court Palace, once home to Henry VIII, is situated just outside London along the River Thames. This palace was Henry VIII's favorite residence. Soon after acquiring it, the king started expanding and renovating the property. His daughter, Elizabeth I, later resided there as well. Visiting the palace offers a genuine journey through history. The artwork and tapestries that Henry VIII and Elizabeth I admired still decorate the walls. As you walk through the hallways, you can envision the historical events that unfolded here.

Exploring the homes, palaces, and sites where history unfolded offers a fresh perspective and appreciation for the past. It is fortunate that many of these buildings still stand today and remain integral to history.
